West Berkshire CAMRA Pub of the year 2018 / Cider pub of the year 2015 / 2017 / 2018 / 2022

What’s not to like. Bar staff are friendly attentive efficient welcoming. Place is buzzing. Great vibe filled with all ages, total mix. Excellent beer and cider menu. A wonderful little charming garden with a welcoming bar gin hut. Space has been thought about and not just some grubby smoke area like other places offer. Inside is also nice and the star of the show of course is the food!!!! Pie !!! Yes wonderful home made top quality pies. And so nice to see they declare the meat to be British. Thin pastry case is the best i have ever eaten in a pub. Wonderful sides and generous gravy boat. I can’t recommend this place enough. Excellent value for money! Don’t miss out!

Having walked out of another pub due to lack of food we walked over to the Catherine Wheel to see if we could eat there instead. My partner has been there before and talked about good pies and knowing the place is a CAMRA approved pub, despite not being my usual haunt, thought at least I could console myself in a good beer and some relaxation

It was Friday night and when we walked in it was immediately obvious that the place was very busy. The Catherine Wheel is a bit of a mess of tables working around the fabric of an old building. It has a patio bar and tables outside in what is best described as a yard too and this was also pretty much full and a cramped but fully loaded bar
Managed to get a table and sit down with a pint and perused the menu. The speciality of the pub is pies with all manner of veg and chips. It’s beer range for ale lovers is also great with four pumps on that night as well as all the usual bar offerings for anyone else. I had two beers that evening and both were excellent

For food we had two pies that are made by Pie Minster – Lady Baa Baa , that was basically lamb, red wine and veg and mine, a house speciality, was Chicken and Leek. We had gravy and peas and potatoes with it and impressed me was it came quickly, tasted great and was just £10.50 for the food. So with a decent pint under 15 quid a head. All the food was good
If that’s the sort of food that appeal, you like good straightforward food and an honest vibrant pub at sensible prices the Catherine Wheel is ideal for you. If you want a wider range of food or something a bit more secluded or special it won’t be your thing but in fairness that is not what the pub professes to be.

Highly recommended
